Excursion 2011 – Institute of Materials Science and Technology

This year’s exciting intstitutes-trip took us to Upper Austria for visiting 2 companies, ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH and ROSENBAUER International AG.

Despite the, for some people, “uncivilized” departure time (7 a.m.) we managed to be on the road almost “on time”:

The exact number of participants (students, employees and professors) – somewhere between 34 and 37 – remains a “mystery”. Whenever the “counter” tried to verify his first counting at departure he / she got another result. This is not necessarily due to the “counter’s” incomplete basic Mathematics knowledge. Somehow there exists no norm wheter the man/woman who counts the number of participants should take him-/herself into account as well, or not. Furthermore one colleague joined us during our trip – so this may be seen as an excuse for the confusion of our “counter.

It took us about 3 hours to get to our first destination – ENGEL AUSTRIA GmbH in Schwertberg. The enterprise is to 100% in family ownership The brand name ENGEL stands for the world’s largest manufacturer of injection moulding machines and, at the same time, one of the world’s leading plastics processing machine manufacturers. In a modern and stylish auditorium we were introduced to the business lines and products.

Although the presentation was very interesting, some people enriched the vivid speech with discreet snoring - in a rhythmic way at least.

Being separated into 4 groups we were shown a very modern production plant where the production of injection moulding machines up to   5.000 kN clamp force is conducted.
After an excellent lunch we drove to our second stop – ROSENBAUER International AG.

ROSENBAUER International AG is the world’s number one in furnishing fire brigades with the complete fire fighting equipment available as well as for the civil defense sector.

Especially the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting vehicles (ARFF), like “Panther”, impressed us a lot.

Some “Panther” benchmark data:

  • Pump with up to 10.000 litres/min
    maximum flow rate
  • Acceleration time: 0 – 80 km/h in 25 sec
  • Braking distance by 85 km/h: 16 meters

Some people also used the shop to extend their wardrobe with top-stylish fire equipment. We think they look pretty nice with their new caps!!!

It was an interesting day and a welcome change to daily business.
